Overview A data visualisation project exploring my Top 100 Spotify favourite songs through five different ways of organising information. Using the LATCH framework as a starting point, I explored how the same dataset can tell different stories depending on how the information is structured, categorised and visualised. If you are interested read more about LATCH here.

LATCH is an acronym representing five key elements used in information design and data visualization.

It stands for:

Location: Organizing data based on geographic or spatial context.
Alphabet: Sorting data alphabetically to facilitate quick user search and comparison.
Timeline: Using chronological elements to present changes in data over time.
Category: Grouping data based on common categories or themes to aid analysis and understanding.
Hierarchy: Introducing a hierarchical structure to emphasize the significance of data elements and their relationships.

LATCH is a design tool that helps designers and graphic creators efficiently organize data in a way that is both effective and accessible to the audience, enhancing comprehension and usability of information.

Results

Location

I organised the songs according to the geographical origin of the artists, creating a visual map of my musical preferences. The spatial structure made it possible to explore the data through location and identify patterns across different regions.

Alphabet

The artists were organised alphabetically, creating a clear structure that allows the information to be quickly scanned, compared and located. The challenge was to make an alphabetical system visually engaging while keeping its functional purpose clear.

Timeline

I organised the songs according to their release dates, turning the dataset into a visual timeline of my musical preferences. The chronological structure reveals how different periods and generations of music are represented in the collection.

Category

I grouped the songs according to the emotions and moods they evoke. Each category was given its own visual character, allowing the emotional dimension of the music to become part of the data visualisation.

Hierarchy

I introduced a visual hierarchy to highlight the songs that have been most significant to me at different points in my life. Scale and visual emphasis were used to communicate different levels of importance within the dataset.

All in one

The final challenge was to bring all five visualisations together on a single B1 sheet. The composition had to accommodate five different information structures while maintaining a clear visual relationship between them. The result brings the entire dataset together as one cohesive information design piece.

Summary

The project explored how the same dataset can communicate different stories depending on how information is organised. Working with the LATCH framework allowed me to experiment with data visualisation, information hierarchy and graphic systems while balancing functionality, clarity and visual expression. The project strengthened my approach to turning complex information into accessible and engaging visual forms.
